What is creative fatigue, and how often should you refresh ads?

Checked 4 min read

Short answer

Creative fatigue is when the people you reach have seen the same ad so often that fewer respond, so each result costs more. Meta flags it in Ads Manager: "Creative limited" when cost per result is above your past ads, and "Creative fatigue" when it is twice as high or more. Neither Meta nor TikTok sets a fixed refresh schedule; both say to add new, clearly different creative when results decline.

What creative fatigue is

Meta defines creative fatigue as an audience seeing the same creative too many times, which makes people less likely to engage and can raise your cost per result. In December 2025 Meta separated it from creative similarity: fatigue is overexposure to one image or video, while similarity is ads that look too alike. Similarity can drive fatigue too, because people see look-alike ads as repeats.

Meta counts all recent exposures of an ad’s image or video, including those from other campaigns on your Page. Moving a tired photo into a new campaign does not clear that history.

How often to refresh

Neither platform publishes a calendar. Both tie the refresh to results.

  • Meta recommends a new ad with a new image or video that is materially different from the original, and notes that keeping the original ad active, instead of pausing it, may maximize results. Its other suggestions are a larger audience and Advantage+ creative.
  • TikTok says to refresh when results decline steadily or daily new users are low, and to add new creatives to the existing ad group instead of starting a new one.
  • TikTok’s Smart Creative does this on its own: it pauses videos that show signs of fatigue in their first 3 to 5 days and rotates in new ones from a waiting list.

Set your own cadence from your data. Log the date each concept launched and the date it was flagged. The average gap is your refresh cycle, and the next batch should be ready before it ends.

Refresh the variant or the concept?

Refresh typeWhat changesUse it when
New variantCrop, background color, headline, button, sizeThe concept still works and you want to test one detail
New conceptScene, customer, message or formatMeta shows "Creative fatigue", or variants of the concept are slipping too

Meta groups look-alike ads and shares their learning, and says high similarity can drive fatigue. When the flag says fatigue, change the idea. How many ad creatives you need shows how to tell a variant from a concept.

How AI changes the cost of a refresh

Refreshing with a camera means a new booking. At soona’s published prices, five new photos cost $149 + 5 × $39 = $344. Made with AI from the product photos you already have, five new concepts at our agency’s average of 8 renders each is 40 renders: $2.68 on Nano Banana 2 or $5.36 on Nano Banana Pro, at Google’s September 2026 prices.

The model fees are small next to the review: 40 renders to judge for five keepers, and every product checked against the real one. Keep the product references identical from one refresh to the next, and run each new concept through the AI image QA checklist. For refreshes planned around holidays, see seasonal campaigns without a photo shoot.

A weekly fatigue check

  • Sort ads by cost per result and look for "Creative limited" or "Creative fatigue".
  • Compare this week’s frequency with last week’s for each ad set.
  • Check the click-through trend for each concept, not each size.
  • On TikTok, check daily new users and the delivery trend per ad group.
  • Log the launch date and flag date of every concept.
  • Queue new concepts for each flagged ad set, and add them to the same ad set or ad group.
  • Leave the tired ad running while the new one learns, as Meta suggests.

Questions people also ask

What frequency is too high?
Meta publishes no cutoff. Its help page says frequency may average 1 to 2 per ad set or be much higher, depending on budget, audience size and schedule, and to act when performance drops as frequency rises.
Should I pause a fatigued ad?
Not right away. When Meta recommends a new ad for creative fatigue, it notes that keeping the original active instead of pausing it may maximize results. Add the new creative first, and retire the old one once the new one is delivering.
Does Advantage+ creative prevent fatigue?
It is one of Meta’s suggested fixes: it makes variations of one image or video and shows each person the version it predicts they will respond to. The variations all come from one image, so they do not replace a new concept.

Where Overs fits

When a concept tires, Overs can remake one photo with a note, or make 1 to 4 versions at once to compare, instead of redoing the whole set. Every attempt is kept, and approvals and rejections become brand memory for later photos.

Free for 40 photos a month. The AI that makes the photos is billed separately, on your own key, with no markup from Overs.
