How many ad creatives do you need each month?
Neither Meta nor TikTok gives a monthly number. TikTok suggests 3 to 5 different creatives per ad group and 3 to 5 ad groups per campaign. Meta says an ad set needs about 50 results a week to finish learning, that too many ads at once hurts results, and that ads that look alike count as one creative. So your number comes from your budget: the ad sets it can feed, times a few distinct concepts each, plus replacements for the ones that tire.
What Meta says about creative volume
Meta now narrows the ads it could show with Andromeda, a retrieval system it described in December 2024: it scans tens of millions of ads and passes a few thousand candidates to its ranking models. Meta’s guidance since then, from its own help pages and news posts:
| Guidance | What Meta says | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| Diversify concepts | Make ads that differ in look, story and message for different customers, instead of small tweaks to one ad | Meta for Business, December 16, 2025 |
| Look-alikes count as one | Meta groups ads that share key visual and thematic attributes and treats them as variations of the same creative, sharing their learning | Meta for Business, December 16, 2025 |
| Fewer ads, more assets | When too many ads run at once, each delivers less and fewer exit learning. One ad can hold up to 10 creative assets | Meta Business Help Center: About managing ad volume |
| Learning needs results | An ad set usually exits the learning phase after about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit | Meta Business Help Center: About the learning phase |
| Page limits | 250 ads running or in review for Pages spending under $100,000 in their highest month; 1,000 under $1 million; 5,000 under $10 million; 20,000 above | Meta Business Help Center: Ad limits per Page |
| AI images help on average | Campaigns using Meta’s image generation feature saw an 11% higher click-through rate and a 7.6% higher conversion rate | Meta for Business, April 22, 2025 and December 16, 2025 |
Meta quotes one advertiser, DribbleUp, which went from 3 or 4 new creatives a week to almost 50 while keeping performance steady. That is one company’s result, published by Meta, and not a target.
What TikTok says
- Use 3 to 5 different creatives per ad group and 3 to 5 diversified ad groups per campaign: 9 to 25 creatives in a campaign (TikTok creative best practices, updated June 2025).
- Pick creatives with big differences, especially when testing.
- Refresh when results decline steadily or daily new users are low, and add the new creatives to the existing ad group to extend its life.
- Smart Creative, TikTok’s automated option, tests differentiated videos for 3 to 5 days on no more than 10% of the ad group’s budget, then swaps out videos that show fatigue (help page updated November 2025).
How to tell a variation from a new concept
Both platforms ask for difference. A variation changes a detail of one idea. A concept changes the idea itself: who it is for, where the product is, what the ad says. Meta calls the first creative iteration and the second creative diversification.
| Change | Variation or concept | Example for a skincare brand |
|---|---|---|
| New headline or button on the same photo | Variation | "Shop now" becomes "Learn more" |
| Same scene, new crop or background color | Variation | The bathroom-shelf photo cropped tighter |
| Same photo in another size | Variation | A 4:5 feed ad resized to 9:16 for Stories |
| New setting for a different customer | Concept | The serum in a gym bag for runners |
| New message | Concept | Ingredients up close for label readers; a two-minute routine for busy parents |
| New format | Concept | A creator video or a carousel in place of a single photo |
Plan in concepts, then make the sizes each one needs. How to adapt one campaign to every ad size covers the second step.
Work out your own number
- Find your weekly results: weekly budget ÷ cost per result. A result is what you optimize for, such as a purchase.
- Divide by 50 to see how many ad sets your budget can carry through Meta’s learning phase. Round down, with a minimum of 1.
- Multiply by 3 to 5 distinct concepts per ad set. That range is TikTok’s per-ad-group advice; Meta publishes no number, and warns against high ad volume.
- Count the concepts Meta marked "Creative fatigue" last month. That is your monthly replacement need; what creative fatigue is explains the flag.
- Add any new ideas you want to test, then check the total against your Page limit (250 ads for Pages whose highest monthly spend is under $100,000).
Weekly ad budget: $____ Cost per result, last 30 days: $____ Results per week = budget ÷ cost per result: ____ Ad sets you can feed = results per week ÷ 50: ____ (at least 1) Live concepts = ad sets × 3 to 5: ____ to ____ Concepts flagged "Creative fatigue" last month: ____ New test ideas this month: ____ New concepts to make = fatigued + tests: ____ Sizes per concept (1:1, 4:5, 9:16...): ____ Files to deliver = new concepts × sizes: ____
Example: a brand spends $3,000 a week on Meta at $25 per purchase. That is 120 purchases a week, enough for 2 ad sets at 50 each, so it runs 6 to 10 live concepts. If 4 were flagged as fatigued last month and it wants 2 new tests, it needs 6 new concepts, and at 3 sizes each, 18 files.
Where AI changes the math
With AI, a new concept costs cents to a few dollars in model fees: at our agency’s average of 8 renders per usable photo, that is $0.54 on Nano Banana 2 or $1.69 on GPT Image 2 at high quality, at September 2026 prices. The work that remains is deciding which ideas are different enough to count as concepts, and checking that the product in every file is the real product. Run every concept through the AI image QA checklist, and test new concepts against old ones as in how to tell if AI creative is working.
Questions people also ask
- Do different sizes of the same image count as different creatives?
- Not for learning. Meta groups ads that look alike and treats them as variations of one creative, so a 1:1, 4:5 and 9:16 cut of the same photo is one concept. Make the sizes, and count them as one when you plan.
- Is more creative always better?
- No. Meta says that when an advertiser runs too many ads at once, each ad delivers less often, fewer ads exit the learning phase, and more budget is spent before the system can optimize. Add concepts at the rate your budget can test them.
- Does Advantage+ creative count as more creatives?
- Advantage+ creative makes automatic variations of one image or video and shows each person the version Meta predicts they will respond to. Since Meta treats look-alike ads as variations of one creative, these help inside a concept and do not replace new concepts.
Where Overs fits
Overs plans a set of 5, 8, 10 or 12 photos from one brief and covers the deliverables you name, such as feed ads, hero and banner. It can set a headline onto a finished photo in a separate step and keeps the clean version. It does not publish ads or read ad results.
Free for 40 photos a month. The AI that makes the photos is billed separately, on your own key, with no markup from Overs.
