How to budget for AI creative tools

Checked 4 min read

Short answer

Budget three lines: model fees, tool seats and people’s time. At 8 renders per finished image and September 2026 prices, 20 images a month costs about $11 to $34 in model fees, 100 images about $54 to $169, and 500 images about $268 to $843. Seats add a fixed fee, and someone has to review 8 renders for every image kept. Put a spend cap on every API key before anyone starts.

Three ways to pay, and how each grows

With your own key, the model fees arrive on a separate bill from the model maker or a reseller. What bring your own key means covers the setup. OpenRouter, a service that sells many AI models under one account and one bill, is a common reseller; what OpenRouter is explains how it works.

Worked monthly budgets

Assumptions: 8 renders per finished image, the average across our agency’s four 2026 campaigns; square images at 1K or 2K; Google and OpenAI prices for September 2026. Your own renders per keeper will differ, so replace the 8 once you have two or three jobs of data. How many AI images it takes to get one you can use explains the spread.

Model fees only. The card fee assumes you buy OpenRouter credits once a month to match the spend.

Seats are the second line. Two prices checked on September 24, 2026: ChatGPT Business costs $20 a seat a month billed yearly or $25 monthly, and the Overs Team plan costs $99 a month for 5 seats, with model fees on each person’s own key. Count every person who makes or approves images.

Time is the third line. At the BLS median graphic designer wage of $30.27 an hour (May 2025), 10 hours of briefing and review cost $302.70, more than the model fees for 100 images a month on any model in the table. For the unit prices behind these lines, see how much AI product photos cost.

Set spend caps before anyone renders

  • OpenRouter: give each person or project its own API key, and set a credit limit on each key. The limit can reset on a schedule, such as daily.
  • Google AI Studio: set a project-level spend cap. Google’s billing tiers also cap the whole billing account each month, at $250 on Tier 1 and $2,000 on Tier 2. Billing data can lag by about 10 minutes, so spend can pass a cap.
  • OpenAI: set a monthly budget in billing settings, after which OpenAI stops serving requests. Enforcement can lag and you pay any overage. You can also set an email alert and limits per project.

What to track every month

  • Renders per keeper, split by shot type: product alone, with a person, with motion.
  • Model fees per keeper.
  • Hours spent on briefs, review and retouching.
  • Keepers that went live, and how they did against your other creative.
  • Spend against each key’s cap.
  • Rejected images and the reason, so the next brief avoids the same miss.

Where AI budgets leak

  • Fixing one bad frame by re-running the whole batch. Remake the one photo.
  • 4K for everything. Nano Banana 2 costs $0.151 at 4K against $0.067 at 1K; remake only the keepers at the large size.
  • Drafting on the most expensive model. Nano Banana 2 Lite costs $0.034 a render against $0.134 for Nano Banana Pro, so test ideas on the cheaper one.
  • One shared key. A single key without a limit can spend the whole month’s budget; give each person a capped key.
  • More renders than anyone can check. At 500 images a month, the table above means 200 renders to review every working day.

Questions people also ask

How much should a small brand put aside to start?
One month of your target volume at the higher model price, plus the card fee. For 20 finished images, that is about $34 in model fees on GPT Image 2 at high quality, plus $1.85 in card fees, before any tool plan.
How often do image model prices change?
Often enough to recheck every quarter. OpenAI released GPT Image 2 in April 2026 and GPT Image 2.5 in September 2026, each with its own cost per image at each quality setting. Update your per-render number when you switch models.
What is the cheapest way to run 500 images a month?
Batch mode, if you can wait for results. Google’s batch prices are half of standard, so 4,000 renders cost $136 on Nano Banana 2 or $268 on Nano Banana Pro, and OpenAI’s Batch API also saves 50% on jobs that can wait up to 24 hours.

Where Overs fits

Overs plans cost $0 for 40 photos a month, $29 a month for Pro or $99 a month for Team, and the AI is billed separately by OpenRouter on your own key, with no markup from Overs. Before any photo is made you see the plan and an estimated cost, which counts one render per photo.

Free for 40 photos a month. The AI that makes the photos is billed separately, on your own key, with no markup from Overs.
