Walmart Marketplace image requirements (2026)

Checked 5 min read

Short answer

Walmart asks for square 1:1 images at 2200 x 2200 pixels, at least 1500 x 1500 for zoom, 5 MB or less, as JPEG, PNG or BMP in RGB; GIF is not allowed. The main image needs a seamless white background (RGB 255, 255, 255) with no watermarks, seller logos or accessories that are not included. Walmart recommends at least four images, bans stock photos, and says AI-generated images must be truthful, accurate and not misleading.

Walmart’s square rule differs from Amazon, which accepts other shapes and asks for 1,000 px or more on the longest side. An Amazon clothing image, which Amazon wants close to 3:4, needs a square version before it fits Walmart. The full Amazon rules are in Amazon product image requirements.

Main image rules

  • Seamless white background, RGB 255, 255, 255. Larger items may be shown in the setting where they are used.
  • Cropped as close to the item as possible, without excess background, and never enlarged from a small image.
  • No watermarks, seller name or seller logo.
  • No accessories that are not included, and few props.

Checking that the white reads as a true 255, and cleaning the edges, is covered in white background product photos.

Rules for every image

  • In focus and professionally lit.
  • Matches the product name and type, and the key attributes in the name, such as color and count.
  • Shows the product or its features, and does not repeat another image.
  • No claims or promotional language.
  • No Walmart logos, and no names or logos of other retailers or marketplaces.
  • Any text in English only.
  • No images saying the product is out of stock or sold out, and no descriptions of condition, such as "grade A", "scratched" or "refurbished".
  • Swatch images for color and pattern options, where they apply.
  • Only Walmart’s own placeholder while real images are pending. The item will not publish until a real image replaces it.
  • No stock photos. Walmart asks for actual product images that match the item sold.

Some categories add rules in Walmart’s Content Standards. Walmart says images that break its rules can get products unpublished, and it can remove those images. When several sellers offer the same item, Walmart picks which content to show unless it comes from the brand owner or an authorized reseller.

What Walmart says about AI images

Walmart’s image guide mentions AI twice as of September 2026. It says AI-generated content must be accurate, truthful, rights-compliant and in line with Walmart’s policies, including its Product details policy. And it says images generated by artificial intelligence must be "truthful, accurate and not misleading."

The page sets no label or metadata step for AI images, unlike Amazon’s tag for AI-generated people or Google’s rule on AI metadata. Two points follow from the wording. An AI image of the product has to show the item the buyer receives, down to color, size, count and parts. And rights-compliant means you need the rights to everything that went into the image, from reference photos to any person’s likeness; see using other people’s photos as AI references and AI images of real people.

Walmart’s ban on stock photos points the same way. It asks for images of the actual product, so a generic AI picture of a product type will not pass.

Image URLs and hosting

You can host images with Walmart or link to your own. A linked image needs a public URL that ends in an image file type, such as .jpg or .png, on port 80, 443, 8080 or 8443. Walmart rejects links to HTML pages, URLs with a query string, Dropbox links and paths with special characters that are not encoded. Most Amazon image URLs work if they meet these rules.

A suggested set. Walmart recommends four images but does not say which four.

Questions people also ask

Does Walmart accept WebP images?
No. Walmart’s image guide lists JPEG, JPG, PNG and BMP, and says GIF images are not permitted. WebP is not on the list, so convert WebP files to JPEG before upload.
Can I reuse my Amazon images on Walmart?
Often, with changes. Both want pure white main images, but Walmart wants every image square at 2200 x 2200 pixels and any text in English, while Amazon accepts other shapes from 500 to 10,000 pixels on the longest side. Walmart accepts most Amazon image URLs if the images meet its rules.
Do I need to label AI images on Walmart?
Walmart’s image guide sets no label or metadata requirement for AI images as of September 24, 2026. Its rule is about accuracy: AI-generated images must be truthful, accurate and not misleading, and must follow Walmart’s other policies.
Why is my image not showing on Walmart.com?
When several sellers offer the same item, Walmart decides which content to show, unless the content comes from the brand owner or an authorized reseller. If you cannot change an item’s content, it shows as locked when you try to update it.

Where Overs fits

Overs exports photos for you to upload; it does not publish to Walmart. Walmart wants every image square at 2200 x 2200 px, so crop and resize the exported files to that size before upload.
