Amazon product image requirements (2026)

Checked 8 min read

Short answer

Amazon’s main image must show one unit of the real product on pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255), filling 85% of the frame, with no text, logos, graphics, watermarks or props that are not included. Files must be JPEG, TIFF, PNG or non-animated GIF, 500 to 10,000 pixels on the longest side, and 1,000 pixels or more to switch on zoom. Since July 23, 2026, photorealistic AI-generated people need a metadata tag.

Amazon’s image specs in one table

These are the technical rules on Amazon’s US Seller Central help pages, checked on September 24, 2026. A file that breaks them fails at upload. A file that passes can still be removed later for breaking the content rules in the sections below.

RequirementAmazon’s ruleWhat to watch
File formatJPEG (.jpg or .jpeg), TIFF, PNG or non-animated GIF. JPEG is recommended.WebP and AVIF are not on the list. EPS, BMP, PDF and layered files such as PSD are named as rejected.
Pixel size500 to 10,000 pixels on the longest sideFiles under 500 px will not upload. Amazon asks you not to enlarge small images to get there.
Zoom1,000 pixels or more on the longest sideAmazon recommends 1,000 px or more for every image. Children’s clothing images under 1,000 px are not allowed.
ResolutionAt least 72 dpiPixel count is what matters. A 2,000 px image saved at 72 dpi is still 2,000 px.
ColorRGB preferredConvert CMYK to RGB. Grayscale is accepted only for gray or silver metal products. Do not rely on an ICC profile for accurate color.
CompressionMinimal or noneSave JPEGs at the highest quality, avoid re-saving the same JPEG many times, and flatten all layers.
File name (bulk upload)Product ID + variant code + extension, for example B000123456.MAIN.jpgSeparate the three parts with periods only. Spaces or dashes block the upload. An ID with no variant code uploads as the main image.
Bulk limit1,000 images and 1 GB per zip fileDelete hidden files such as __MACOSX folders before you zip.
Time to go liveUp to 24 hoursAmazon picks images from every seller on a listing, so yours may not be the one shown.

Main image rules

The main image is the one shoppers see in search results, so it carries the strictest rules. Amazon’s product image guide, clothing guide and suppression list add up to this:

  • The background is pure white, RGB 255, 255, 255 (#FFFFFF). Any other background is a suppression reason.
  • The product fills 85% of the image, and no part of it is cut off by the frame.
  • The product appears once. Show the front only, not the front and back side by side.
  • Only one unit is shown, plus accessories that come in the box.
  • No text, logos, graphics or watermarks. Amazon’s clothing guide adds borders, color blocks and inset images to the list.
  • No props that are not included and could confuse the buyer. Props inside, around or covering the product count as propping.
  • No packaging, brand tags or swing tags, unless the packaging is part of the product, such as a carrying case or gift basket.
  • No mannequin in any form: clear, solid color, flesh-toned, a frame or a hanger.
  • A realistic, professional-quality image with true scale, quantity and color. No placeholders.

Amazon does not say how it measures 85%. Its clothing page says 85% of the total image area, which leaves little white space. In practice, crop so the product nearly touches two opposite edges of the frame, with a small, even margin. For checking the white with an eyedropper and cleaning edge halos, see white background product photos.

Exceptions by category

Some categories change the default rules. These come from Amazon’s clothing guide, its style guides page and its suppression list:

CategoryMain image rule
Adult clothingOn a model who is standing, not sitting, kneeling, leaning or lying down. Front view, whole garment in frame, close to a 3:4 width-to-height ratio.
Children’s and baby underwear, leotards and swimwearFlat and never on a model, in every image.
Clothing accessories and multipacksFlat, without a model.
ShoesOne shoe, facing left, at a 45-degree angle.
Non-clothing products in kids, baby, shoes, luggage, watches and jewelryNo human model on the main image.
Socks and stockingsA mannequin, packaging or brand tags may appear.
Beds, bed frames, mattresses, rugs, rug pads and sofasA lifestyle photo may be the main image, with no text or extra logos.
Gray or silver metal productsGrayscale files are accepted.
Clothing sold in several colorsEach color needs its own main image on its child SKU.

Amazon also publishes category style guides as PDFs, linked from its style guides page. Read the one for your category before a shoot or a render, because it can add rules to the ones above. For apparel formats, see ghost mannequin, flat lay or on-model. For shoes and jewelry, see AI photos for shoes, jewelry and accessories.

Rules for the other images

Amazon requires one compliant main image and recommends at least six more plus one video. The extra images can show other angles, the product in use, details and what comes in the box. Every one of them must still:

  • Show the product you are selling accurately, and match the product title.
  • Leave out customer reviews, star ratings, claims such as "free shipping" and seller information.
  • Leave out Amazon logos and badges such as "Amazon’s Choice" or "Best seller".
  • Show children’s and baby underwear, leotards and swimwear flat, without models.
  • Use only the marketplace’s official language or English for any text, if you upload country-specific images.

Each slot has a variant code. MAIN is the main image, PT01 to PT99 are additional images, SWCH is a color swatch, FRNT, BACK, LEFT, RGHT, TOPP, BOTT and SIDE are angles, and PS01 to PS06 are safety images. Bulk uploads need the code in the file name. For how many images to plan, see how many photos a listing should have. A+ Content modules below the listing have their own sizes, covered in Amazon A+ Content images.

Why Amazon suppresses listings for images

When a main image breaks a rule, Amazon can hide the listing from search until you upload a compliant image, or edit the image itself, for example to remove a watermark. Replace a bad main image rather than deleting it. These are the reasons on Amazon’s image suppression page:

Suppression reasonApplies toFix
Text, logo, graphics or watermarkMain imageUpload a clean version of the same shot.
Background not pure whiteMain imageSet the background to RGB 255, 255, 255.
Additional itemsMain imageRemove anything that is not sold with the product.
Cropped productMain imageShow the whole product inside the frame.
In packaging, or brand or swing tags showingMain imageShow the product out of the box, tags removed.
ProppingMain imageRemove props inside, around or over the product.
Blurry or pixelatedAny imageUse a sharper file, 1,000 px or more.
Product too small in the frameAny imageCrop tighter.
Human model on a non-clothing productMain image in kids, baby, shoes, luggage, watches and jewelryUse a product-only main image.
Mannequin or hangerMain image in apparel and accessoriesUse a model or a flat shot, as the category requires.
Model not standingMain image in apparelUse a standing pose.
Several views of one productMain image in apparelShow one view.

Two upload errors matter to anyone editing product photos. Error 990003 means the new main image shows a different product from the one on the listing, and Amazon says a product that has changed needs a new listing. Error 100239 means the main image does not match its file name. Suppressed listings show up under the Fix tab in Manage Products.

AI images and the new tag for AI people

Amazon’s product image guide does not ban AI-made images. It asks for an accurate, realistic image of the product you sell, and its clothing guide allows only photos for clothing main images, not sketches, drawings or graphics. One rule is new. Since July 23, 2026, an image or video with a photorealistic AI-generated person must carry the keyword contains-synthetic-performer in its XMP dc:subject metadata before upload. Real people edited with AI tools do not need it.

How to add the tag, and where AI images are safe or risky on Amazon, is in can you use AI images on Amazon.

Checklist before you upload

  • Longest side is 1,000 px or more, and no more than 10,000 px.
  • The file is a flat JPEG in RGB, saved once at high quality.
  • The main image background reads 255, 255, 255 in the corners and along the product’s edge.
  • The product fills about 85% of the frame, appears once, and nothing is cropped.
  • Only what ships in the box is in the frame.
  • No text, logos, graphics or watermarks on the main image.
  • Category exceptions are checked: clothing, shoes, kids, and the furniture types allowed a lifestyle main image.
  • Color, size and count match the real product and the title.
  • Bulk files are named like B000123456.MAIN.jpg and B000123456.PT01.jpg.
  • Every image with a photorealistic AI-generated person is tagged contains-synthetic-performer.

Questions people also ask

Can Amazon edit my images?
Yes. Amazon’s image guide says it may modify the images you submit to meet its requirements or improve the shopping experience, and its suppression page gives removing a watermark as an example. On a listing shared with other sellers, Amazon can also show another seller’s image instead of yours.
Can I use the same images in every Amazon country?
Mostly. Uploading as Global uses the same images in every store in your account’s region where you have a listing, and the US store only takes Global uploads. Other regions need an upload from that region’s account. For different images in one country, such as images with text in its language, upload a country-specific set that includes a MAIN image. Without the MAIN image, Amazon ignores that country set and falls back to your Global images.
Why is my new image not showing on the listing?
It can take up to 24 hours. Amazon also chooses images from every seller on a listing, so another seller’s image can be the one shown. An upload identical to an earlier one can be treated as a duplicate and change nothing. Check Submission status and the Content compliance issues report for errors.
Can I delete a main image that breaks the rules?
No. Every ASIN needs a main image, so Image Manager will not let you delete it. Upload a compliant replacement with the MAIN variant code, or use the camera icon under the main thumbnail in Image Manager, and allow up to 24 hours for the change to show.
